Chennai: The IIT scholar who was attacked for participating in a campus beef festival to protest the central government’s ban on sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets, said there are moves to sabotage the case. Sooraj, the victim, underwent 2 surgeries on his right eye. The attacker Manishkumar Singh has been identified but is yet to be taken into custody. Sooraj, who is still being treated in the hospital, was not visited by anyone from the college.
Sooraj in a video shot from the hospital and which was posted in Facebook said he fears attempts are being made to sabotage the case in the present circumstances and the FIR has been framed leaving out the crucial details of the incident.
Sooraj in the post said he was approached by Maneesh when he was having food at the vegetarian mess of the IIT hostel. Maneesh approached him and asked about his background. Sooraj answered his questions calmly and during the course of the talk, Maneesh asked him if he consumes beef. Sooraj said he does eat beef.
Next, Maneesh asked if Sooraj had taken part in the recently held beef fest. When Sooraj answered in the affirmative, Maneesh was agitated. Immediately Maneesh hit him on the back of his head. Sooraj was lifted and hurled on the ground. One of Sooraj’s friend who rushed to save him was blocked by Maneesh’s colleagues. Sooraj said he suspects a conspiracy behind all these incidents.
At the same time a faction of the students believe that the attack on Sooraj was not a sudden and impromptu one and there was a section of students who nurtured strong dislike towards Malayalees in IIT.
The photo of Maneesh lying in the hospital with a plastered hand was posted on Facebook in a page I support Maneesh. His friends allege that Maneesh hand was broken by Sooraj.
Students say that Maneesh had created problems even before on the campus.
