Kanjirapally: Septuagenarian couple and their five-member family are struggling to sleep at night in a leaking house after two rooms of their house were demolished for road construction on the Kanjirapalli- Eerattupetta road.
The 1.5 cent homestead where 77-year-old Thankappan and 73-year-old Rajamma, Theepporippparambil, have been living for over 50 years is situated between the Chittar river and the road near to the Valavukayam area.
Their two grown up daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren are also residents of this house which has been partially demolished and is covered with tarpaulin from a side.
The proximity to the river and peaking monsoons have been flooding the house on most nights. With two rooms being demolished, the family barely has enough space to sleep or cook. Of late, on most days they have been sleeping sitting up at night due to the lack of space to lie down.
The old couple were sustaining themselves on the revenue from a cow and through daily wage labor. Thankappan fell seriously ill five years ago and the couple had to sell the cows. The old couple were already struggling to make ends meet when their house was demolished. They also said that their requests to the local representatives and officials had gone unheeded so far.
