Gudalur: Farmers in Gudalur region are living in fear of raids by elephants and other wild animals for the past several days. Acres of crops were destroyed as elephant herds strayed into their farms.
On the wee hours of Sunday, three pachyderms destroyed coconut palms and banana plants by straying into the house compound of one Ismail of Cherambadi. Though people tried to drive away the elephants, they left the place only after one-and-a-half hours.
On Saturday morning, elephants came near the BSNL office, but the locals shooed them away. They were again spotted at Cherambadi bazaar.
There are three adults and a calf in the herd that has been giving sleepless nights for the natives Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Koranchal for the past two weeks.
Meanwhile, in Malakkappara, wild elephants ransacked a Tata Coffee estate near Valparai and destroyed 9 houses. The incident happened on Saturday early morning. The herd of pachyderms destroyed the windows and doors of the houses. The elephants also threw out vessels, mixie, chairs and other things from the kitchen.
