Vallikunnam (Alappuzha): In an incident of police high-handedness, a biker sustained serious injuries when he fell down after being hit by a lathi thrown by a policeman during a routine vehicle inspection.
Nisam (22), a native of Nambukulangara, who remained unconscious for about half an hour after the incident, was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College.
Civil police officer of Vallikunnam police station V Kannan has been suspended over the incident.
The incident happened around 8 pm near the petrol pump at Choonad junction on Saturday.
Nisam, who is a fish merchant, was going to his house from Oachira on his bike. The civil police officer threw a lathi at him when he tried to escape after seeing the police conducting vehicle inspection. On being hit by the lathi, Nisam fell down and hit his head on the ground. Nisam was not wearing a helmet.
Police and locals took Nisam, who had become unconscious, to the Kayamkulam Taluk hospital.
Nisam regained consciousness only after one and a half hours. As his injuries were serious, Nisam was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College.
The police version is that lathi was not thrown at Nisam and it was just waved at him.
The civil police officer has been suspended pending enquiry by the Alappuzha district police chief Muhammed Rafeeq.
The district police chief has also entrusted Chengannur DySP KR Sivasuthan Pillai to probe the case and to submit a report.
A police team led by Mavelikkara CI P Sreekumar, Kayamkulam CI Sadan visited the hospital on hearing about the incident.
The large number of locals who gathered at the hospital protested against the police action against the youth.
Police action draws widespread protest
While DYFI activists blocked the Choonad- Kattanam road over the incident, Youth Congress workers staged a blockade at the Vallikunnam police station road.
The protest was withdrawn only after Mavelikkara CI P Sreekumar reached the spot and assured action against the erring policeman.
BJP Vallikulam west area committee also protested over the incident.
