Thiruvananthapuram: In a meeting convened by the Chief Minister with the ministers C Ravindranath, K K Shailaja and V Sunil Kumar in attendance, the Vice Chancellors of several universities have purportedly put forward suggestions, even one for scrapping the controversial internal assessment system, as apart of the overall reform of the self-financing colleges in the state.
The meeting has decided to ensure that every self-financing college will have a functional PTA and an active students' union. A committee of four vice-chancellors handpicked by the education minister will study the possible reforms in the internal assessment system.
Inadequate infrastructure in the colleges and the laxity on the part of the universities in implementing the effective control mechanisms over such colleges was also discussed. The meeting also discussed the teacher appointments in such colleges. Instructions have been given to ensure that only university approved posts were maintained and such posts should be filled and paid in accordance with the university guidelines. There are allegations that back-door appointments of teachers has resulted in lawlessness and arbitrariness in the college campuses with such appointees turning tormentors.
The meeting also stressed that the students must be given priority in the educational system. Academic quality must be ensured and every college must adhere to the standards set by the university. Any aberration must be reported by the administrative committee that will be formed and should be taken care of.
