Kozhikode: The Centre’s move to appoint BJP leader Alpons Kannanthanam as Chandigarh’s Administrator — with a rank equivalent to that of Lieutenant Governor — was put on hold on Wednesday night following objection from Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal.

Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki was holding the additional charge of UT Administrator ever since Shivraj Patil demitted office in January 2015.

Considering reservations voiced by the Alkalis, BJP leader Amit Shah told Alpons that his appointment has been kept on hold.

Earlier, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, reacting to the appointment, asked the Centre to “restore the time-tested convention on Chandigarh”.
