India Test discard leg-spinner Piyush Chawla picked up five wickets and Kerala left-arm seamer Prasanth Parameswaran took four wickets as defending champions Chemplast defeated Indian Income Tax by 82 runs in the BCCI Corporate Trophy at Motera. Parameswaran also bagged the man-of-the-match award.
Put into bat, Chemplast rode on Mayank Agarwal's 74, Robin Bisht's 72 and R Sathish's 64 as they went on to post 286 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their stipulated 50 overs.
Chemplast lost two wickets early (20/2 in 4.1 overs) but Agarwal and Bisht put on 125 runs for the third wicket to put their house in order. After that Sathish put on 79 runs with Chawla (34 from 25 balls, 1x4, 3x6) for the sixth wicket to push their team's total past the 250-run mark.
Local boy Ajitesh Argal and Iresh Saxena picked up two wickets each for 51 and 63 runs respectively while AG Junagade, Rohit Dahiya, Jay Desai and Ravi Jangid all picked one wicket each.
In reply, Income Tax were off to bumpy start losing their first wicket with just 14 runs on the board. Local boy Jay Desai held one end together but they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were 86 for five in the 14th over. Desai score 56 runs off 53 balls with seven hits to the fence and one six. He was the sixth man out with the team total on 91. Another Gujarat cricketer Rohit Dahiya then added 70 runs with A Subramanian for the seventh wicket. But once Dahiya was out for 37 off just 30 deliveries, the writing was on the wall. Subramanian waged a lone battle for a while but there was not much sting in the tail and the team folded for 204 in the 31st over. Subramanian remained not out on 51.
In the other match of the day, Andhra Bank edged past Indian Oil by a narrow 13-run margin. Put into bat, Andhra Bank posted 237 runs in 48 overs after useful contributions from Hanuma Vihari (74 from 98 balls, 5x4s), Ravi Teja (45 from 61 balls, 5x4, 1x6), Neeraj Bist (43 from 55 balls, 3x4s) and Arjun Yadav (37 from 25 balls 4x4, 1x6). Andhra Bank looked set for a 250-plus score having lost their fifth wicket for 215 runs in the 45th over. But the last five batsmen could just add 22 runs before they were bowled out in the 49th over.
Right-arm seamer Amit Dani was the pick of the Indian Oil bowlers picking four wickets for 41 runs. Rohan Raje, also a right-arm seamer bagged three wickets for 46 runs. Murtuza Hussain got two wickets.
Indian Oil in reply never really took off but was cruising with Baroda stumper Pinal Shah holding fort with a composed 76 from 90 balls. Most of the other players played around him but failed to build a good partnership. But even then Indian Oil looked pretty much on track to pull it off. They needed 25 runs from five overs with three wickets in hand but the Indian Oil tail couldn't tackle the left-arm orthodox spin of Lalit Mohan and off-break of Hanuma Vihari and caved in by the 48th over and 13 runs short of their target.
