MUMBAI: A police constable attached to the motor transport department and two ward boys of Nagpada police hospital were arrested on Saturday for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman constable in the hospital.
Driver Navnath Khedke and ward boys Mahesh Bariya (31) and Shankar Ambavale (42) have been booked for outraging the modesty of woman.
The incident took place on February 6 but the survivor was too traumatized to lodge a complaint.
Recently, she confided in a doctor who took her to the police.
A recent recruit, the survivor had fractured her left leg during a training session and was taken to the Nagpada police hospital in mid-January. "She met Khedke and Bariya there. Initially, Khedke showed her a lot of sympathy, offered her help and even gave her his ATM card in case of financial crisis. But she refused to accept any monitory assistance," said an officer from the Nagpada police hospital. "Bariya also arranged for food for her from a local caterer. Bariya and Khedke started calling her on her mobile."
When the woman insisted that he should take his card back, Khedke asked her to meet him behind the out patient department. "The survivor met Khedke and Ambavale in a cabin. They initially asked after her health and then Ambavale quietly left. Alone, Khedke tried to force himself on her," an officer said. "When the victim attempted to flee, she found the door locked from outside. When she started screaming, Khedke asked Ambavale, who was waiting outside, to open the door. Before she ran out, they warned her against lodging a complaint. Ever since, she has been depressed," said a police officer.
