UPDATE (with photos): Kitana Joseph is 2014 carnival princess

Kitana Joseph

Dominica has a new Carnival Princess in the name of Kitanna Joseph.

Kitanna who is a nine-year-old student of the St Martin Primary school copped the title at the 2014 Carnival Princess show held at the Harlem Plaza on Sunday evening.
Along with the title, she also walked away with the prizes of Miss congeniality, Best in Costume, Best talent and Miss Intelligence.

Speaking to Dominica News Online after the show the newly crowned princess said that she enjoyed the costume round the most.

Joseph is the daughter of former Carnival queen contestant, Aisha Mark, who recently passed.

She thanked her mother for the support while she was alive.

“I did hard work, I did all my steps well,” she said. “I had a lot of inspiration from my mother, thanks to God, my mother for encouragement, my family, my sponsor Springfield Training, the St Martin Primary School, Dominca Grammer School and everybody … thank you.”

Alyssa Letang of the Convent Prep took the 1st runner up position and the prize for best in party dress. Tia Toussaint of San Sauveur primary school took the third position and also won the People’s Choice award.

Nikisha Luke from the Campbell primary came fourth.

yes I just viewed the carnival princess show on marpin and my belief is the judges list definitely needs reviewing for next year. The San Sauveur Primary School was by far the winner of the competition and should have captured best talent and best in party dress. Rotaract club members please review the show and your judges so that these little children will not be robbed in another competition.

let us stop this negativity. The child won and we have to accept it. I guess the supporters of the 1st runner-up is upset because of who they are.

Please note that things have changed in DA. Everybody have to survive. Money, name and colour of skin days are over. Have a great carnival everyone. LOve and peace

In December the cry was stay strong Aisha, Lord heal her and look at today. We dragging her daughter’s name and her name to the gutter. Over a child’s pageant. I was there and yes I supported my dear friend’s daughter. I can confidently say the show was a great show. All the princesses were great. There was dancing, singing, playing of pan, monologues. The costumes were all built by Darnley Guye and so no best costume award but a best IN costume award. The dresses were all pretty. The princesses represented their schools well. They were well prepared. But there can only be one winner. The entertainment was great. Rotaract Club did a great job. Hats off to you. So let us support these little girls to be exceptional at all they do and this fighting needs to stop. Aisha did not like bickering and it is indeed sad that we are doing that now and it involves her daughter. I am using my name. I am standing by my comments.

Dominicans are truly something else.Yes we may all have that certain person that we may have come to support but on the night of the show the BEST girl wins and Kitana Joseph was the BEST girl on the said night. To say that she won based on sympathy is somewhat shameful because this little girl worked her way to winning that crown. As adults it is appalling the way we behave and then we wonder why young people behave the way they do.Kitana you worked hard and you DESERVED your crown princess.Pay no mind to your critics. Use their negativity as a stepping stone to aspire towards greater things. I surely can tell you I was proud of you on Sunday and I’m sure your mommy was too.

We have to stop that nonsense of name in that country. Give a poor person a chance to succeed. Because she comes from a struggling family she does not deserve to win? All u think that is 2002 when her mother was robed of her orown? All of us know who they wanted to win but not this time. Thanks judges. Go and rest the case in peace. Kitanna is 2014 Carnival Princess. Who vex lost. Who Jah bless no man curse. I rest my case.

Boy if it was some celebrity/basketball player in the good ole US of A participating in the Championship game because he doesn’t want to let down his team and he knows his mama would want him to play even though she just died. All you would be crying for him when he not even crying and all you don’t even know him personally. But a little child having a little fun showcasing her talent all you have to make her feel bad so. Stop insulting the child mother memory so, all you too wicked and disgraceful. Maybe that’s one way the child is dealing with her grief, who knows maybe she just pictured everyone in the crowd as her mom and she just performed like she never did before, for he MOM. Instead of encouraging the child that she is brave enough to hit the stage and perform while dealing with such a huge loss in her young life, you people are bringing her down.

Congrats Kitana. I don’t know you but you’re a talented positive little girl but don’t let the negative souls bring you down.

I have been attending the Princess show for a number of years. Yesterday’s show was of a very high standard and was one of the best in many years. All of the contestants should be congratulated for a job well done.
It was no surprise when Kitana emerged the winner. She was exceptional in the costume round. This little nine year old brought so much excitement and exerted so much energy on stage, as she moved so vigorously to the music. Infact, you had no choice but like the performance, and evidently the judges enjoyed it too. Hope the Queen contestants were watching. We must remember too that the prize is not awarded for best costume but rather for best in costume. Evidently, Allyssa had the best costume but restricted her movements on stage and kept her head down all the time.
Regarding the talent round, I believe it must have been a close call between Alyssa and Kitana, but given that there were some glitches by Alyssa then Kitana’s flawless display would have edged out Allysa’s. The speech segment is undisputed, Kitana delivered the best speech.
Congratulations to all the contestants and in particular Princess Kitana. You are so strong! God Bless!
Dominicans let us embrace, comfort, respect and congratulate our little princess for she has worked so hard even when losing her mother. Stop the negative comments! These are little kids that expect us to provide them with direction and guidance!

  21. February 17, 2014

Kitty, please do not worry with all those negative comments, YOU DESERVED THE CROWN, your mother was ROBBED of her CROWN because she was a NATURALIST, NO MAKE UPS. Your mum is in Heaven laughing, smiling, at your achievement.
We all LOVE you. You performed GREAT.
You deserved your position. Who Jah bless no man curse.
If you had big name it would be ok with those critics.

    February 17, 2014

I want to say one thing in this debate. The show has come and gone and the results cannot be reversed however I have to agree with sympathetic to some degree. I did hear the music skip and that was not the child’s fault and I really admired hos the student from convent prep continued playing even though the music skipped. And let us be fair here, the music did skip and she executed her talent well. The pan was very well played. The student from st martin school also had a good talent anyone of the two could have gotten best talent for me.

In terms of the speech, honestly I had convent prep first, followed by san sauveur and then st martin school. For the costume, I had convent prep, then Campbell, then st martin school. I think the winner’s dancing in the costume was a bit too mush and she did not display the elements of the costume to me like the prep and Campbell shild did.

For the party dress, convent prep surely followed by st martin school. I also do agree that there must have been some bias on sympathy. I saw people crying so I know, even looking at the faces of the judges you could tell that one or two had a little sympathy in their eyes. Like I said to someone, anyone who won would have been fine for me because they both performed well, but I would definitely give the convent prep student the edge. someone has to explain to me how the winner copped all these awards.

people are talking about san sauveur, I have to disagree. San sauveur was not impressive to me she was not consistent. the top two were really saint martin and convent prep.

A very good show and congrats to all the Young ladies, they did well.

Do not be so bias. San Sauveur was consistent in all her rounds and should win best talent and best in party dress. Her dress was the only outstanding one out of the mix and moved like a true princess in that dress. The other dresses were seen as a uniform worn with different colours. Many of the spectators viewing the show revealed that they they seeing the same dress on stage until Tia came out with her unique creation. Tia is our princess and we are proud of her because she performed remarkably. have all you dispute between convent prep and st. Maarten but leave us out in all you confusion please.

help me understand here, a claim is being made that because her mom died she got the crown. clearly this is a pointless cuz if she did not work for the title i see no way a panel of judges giving her a crown. The supporters of Ms. Letang need to learn that she was out staged. This is not 2002. Kitty me say. 2014 carnival princess and will be for the next year.

I SUPPORT THIS STATEMENT. I was here in 2002. I cried when Miss Mark was robbed of her crown. They still want their child to be princess. But those people not easy. This is 2014 give the struggling family a chance. What happen to these people. From all reports the child was extremely good. My three daughters called me the same evening and was so happy. Tell these people let the child reign and go in peace. What happen title is for one set in this country. stuppes.

  34. Congrats
    February 17, 2014

First of all Congrats to the Princess and all the contestants. I did not get to see the show in it’s entirety so I won’t even attempt to judge who should win. I did see the talent of Convent, Bense, Pioneer and that of the Crowned princess. The Crowned Princess was out performed by all the other three. I do recall one of the ladies announcing the winners state that the talent round determines who wins crown. Exactly how did the Princess win the talent round when her dance moves weren’t executed as well as the other 3 that I saw show-cased their talent and one even delivered a message? I understand that the title could help bring her some form of comfort on the recent passing of her Mom but am I the only one feeling like this is a sympathy win? I don’t mind her being placed because all the princess did well and are all courageous. But if Best Talent is the “main Course,” that wasn’t it! Judges need to be revised for next year though. All in All: The show seemed well organized. Job well done to the organizers!

It’s really a sad day when instead of celebrating and congratulating the young lady that won the princess show, we are talking so much negativity. I am sure she did not win because her mother recently passed away so stop talking nonsense. At times I am ashamed to be Dominican when I hear the ignorance of my people. Must everything have a controversy. How many of you would be able to lose a loved one and still be brave and strong enough to continue on this journey. I am positive that here mom wanted her to carry on and maybe that was her way of coping with the loss of her mom. My people stop being negative and let the young lady reign in peace. She has had to deal with enough in her young life.

  40. watchdog
    February 17, 2014

Ok folks. Lets put this into context. The young lady who the judges gave the nod did good, matter of fact they all did well. But lets go back a bit.
First round – Ms Letang clearly won that round. Not sure how the judges saw that differently.
Second round – Ok, Ms. Joseph can put her legs behind her leg. She’s flexible. But on raw talent, Ms. Letang won the round.
    Third round – A toss up……….
Fourth round – Clearly won by Ms. Letang.

So putting all the above into context, how did the judges arrive at a victory for Ms. Joseph??!! Clearly the Rotaract Club needs to look at the calibre f judges. Sure they are lawyers and accountants etc, but they were clearly influenced by the large St. Martin School followers. Also the MC at certain points in the show showed clear bias towards the eventual winner.

Overall a great show, but once again the JUDGES GOT IT ALL WRONG!! Reasoning……I’ll leave it right here for now……

      February 17, 2014

Watchdog Look at the tape when Marpin or SAT playing it. Ms Letang did not enjoy herself. Her costume was beautiful but she did not carry it. How you dancing and your head down. Her smile was plastic. The child was under too much pressure. Her party dress was beautiful but was too big for her. It was a balancing scale rocking back and front. Learning to play an instrument in my opinion is not a talent. And she made errors playing the pan too. And I felt the little child from San Sauveur should have been first runner up. Kitanna deserved her title.
All the children were very good. Show was off a high standard. In all rounds the children represented their school well. And lemme tell you there was elegance class and intelligence on that stage. Kitanna simply edged them out. Judged had it HARD.

      • watchdog
        February 17, 2014

Anonymous you cannot be serious. Learing to play an instrument is not a talent???? What olanet are you from?? Come on. bviously all the kids are under pressure in competition, and all I’m saying is that Ms. Letang clearly won rounds that would have sealed the win for her very easily. So hence my questioning the judges motivation in handing the crown to Ms. Joseph. Ant the lady from San Sauveur, hmmmm……first runner up?….hmmmm were we looking at the same show????

        February 17, 2014

Firstly your comment has no water. Ms Letang clearly won the show hands down. This was not a pageant about sympathy it was a pageant to be judged on the evening of the performance. Ms Letang did not just learn to play the steel pan. She plays it and played it last year at another event so get your facts straight. Can you play an instrument? What do you know about music? And if you know about music which I doubt you do, her playback skipped about three times and she did not stop playing. only a person who knows music can continue playing an instrument and bounce back. she made no errors, I am a musician and I heard not one bad note being played. Also in terms of her speech, the content and delivery was exceptional for ms letang.Ms Joseph spoke 3/4 about cancer. This is a child’s pageant not a platform speech was expected, and she used her mother in that was which I did not appreciate at all.

Having a crowd screaming at you is not as important as we make it seem, it however did influence the judges.

Don’t get me wrong, both contestants were very good however I believe that ms Joseph was edged out by Ms Letang. Playing with the death of her mother was her key to winning and it worked. Only in Dominica we feel sorry for people and just hand them things. where else in the world can that happen.

You are a very biased individual and her dress was a child’s princess dress. Did you even listen to the description. Ms Joseph’s dress was too big, I really want you to look at it on television. Me Letangs dress fit her perfectly. We all go to shows with our preconceived winners but they do not always win. Aisha’s daughter won the pageant before the show began because of the sympathy. I am very open here, Aisha was my friend and I believe that fair is fair. Ms Joseph performed well but yesterday she was not the best. I would put her second.

I don’t know if your trying to say that because children are well. ..children ..they are not intellectual. But i see no problem with ¾ of that speech being about cancer. Its amazing to see a child grasp the concept of death so preciously. I prefer hear about something REAL!! AND NOT…I LIKE TO READ AND COLOUR AND DANCE !! WHICH CUD JUST B FULL OF LIES. And to say that a crowd of lil children influenced the judgment…..lol ur amazing(y)

Fyi..they all had child princess dresses……she did not play with her mothers death..it was true and genuine and if I remember well…from my understanding that it…ms letang was getting better treatment than all the other grls just bcuz of who her mother is….who by the way did not deserve to win queen show…hahahaha tables turned !

LET US HAVE A LOOK AT UR COMMENTS. U DON’T SAY THO IN MOST WHAT GAVE’ MS LETANG’ THE UPPER HAND.
RAW TALENT EGS- SINGING WELL, DANCING WELL, ETC
SO IF I’M CORRECT….”Raw talent is viewed as natural and powerful. In most cases, raw talent is not learnt or acquired – it simply comes naturally or is mastered quickly without much failure. It often does not require any formal training or education. Raw talent is commonly self-taught and draws from an innate ability deep within.” – DICTIONARY
Hence…..the ability to put ur legs over ur head is raw talent..i bet u cant do it.
Hey i cant play pan..but guess what i’m sure ms letang wasn’t delivered by her mother with pan sticks in her hands. Mayb dey train her couple years to learn hw to play it just so they could send her up for princess show………but don’t mind me…dts just me. Not insulting her tho..i love pan … i agree with @anonymous

Every aspect of the show was of a very high standard except the judging. These judges need to be fair and stop with all the bias. Tia had the best talent by far and she and Kitana stood out of the pack. They were 1 and 2. But Tia is a little country girl with a little surname so who is she to compete for crown? FYI, I was impressed with Kitana and in no way this geared at her but at the crooked judges.

I know her mom personally and she would have wanted her to do her thing. I am so proud of this little girl. Some of us could learn a lesson or two from her so if you can’t say something positive just shut up!!!!

      February 17, 2014

or maybe it could have been hard work and determination to make her mother proud who was there with her knowing she was participating in princess show
congrats first them comment too much negativity

      February 17, 2014

Yes you reading correct. And she deserve her crown. Her mom was looking down on her yesterday.

    • My take
      February 17, 2014

It was her mother’s dying wish that she continue on in the competition.

    • looking in
      February 17, 2014

yes Anonymous, you are reading correctly. her mom was still very much alive when she was preparing for the show,it was her wish that her daughter would continue through. what about the lesson’don’t drop everything and weep every time something bad happens’ and you should learn a lesson yourself ‘stop the negativity’ and fyi, have a person like warrington back you up is not a good thing since he/she is obviously foolish and like they say, birds of a feather flock together.

    • looking in
      February 17, 2014

oh boy warrington, I write your name with a w and not W because I don’t think you deserve the respect. I can’t get over how foolish you are and I am thinking hmmm i’m sure this person’s looks matches their thinking. lol
