Poland and Slovenia hold similar positions on Brexit crisis and migration issues, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said here on Tuesday after talks with her visiting Slovenian counterpart Miro Cerar, according to Polish Press Agency.
During the press conference after their meeting, Szydlo said she and Cerar had exchanged views on key issues in bilateral relations and on EU-related matters. The talks focused on security, economic cooperation and the situation in the EU, Szydlo added.
"In a number of issues, Poland's and Slovenia's opinions are very similar. This is primarily related to things going on in the EU," Szydlo stressed.
According to her, Poland and Slovenia share similar views with regards to migration and Brexit that are going to be "in the focus of discussion in the next months in the EU".
Szydlo said both countries believe that "the migration crisis should be resolved in regions where it originates."
"We are going to be very active in increasing the protection of the European Union's external borders," Szydlo declared.
Commenting on the major challenge for the EU caused by Britain's decision to leave the bloc, the Polish prime minister said that "27 EU members should share a single stance" in negotiations with Britain "to ensure partner relations and good cooperation in economy and defense."
Cerar said that after Brexit, the EU had to remain united. The bloc should also pay more attention to the issue of mass migration and take effective action in countries where the problems originate and stop migration at its borders.
Szydlo also expressed hope for stronger economic ties between the two countries. "We hope that the cooperation will also be related to our defense industry's offer."
Cerar noted that Poland was the seventh biggest trade partner for Slovenia.
The heads of government also discussed cooperation within NATO and Slovenia's cooperation with the Visegrad Group that apart from Poland comprises the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.
