Reliance launching cab services on Republic Day 2017? Mukesh Ambani led Reliance to wipe out local taxi scenario claims viral Facebook post

What is with people on the Internet? When they are bored of death hoaxes, they cook up stories about something as random as Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance launching cab services on Republic Day 2017 in Mumbai. Yes, if you have also come across this viral piece of information, either on WhatsApp or Facebook, then do not be too baffled or excited. According to a picture post going viral on the social media, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is investing into cab services, giving a fierce competition to Uber and Ola. A picture (poorly photoshopped) showing a screenshot of Times of India newspaper, announces Reliance’s grand venture into the business of technology-based cab service providers on January 26, 2017. This has drawn quite an attention from the netizens, both positive and fuming! But hold on second guys, this is an absolute piece of false news.

A photo is doing rounds on the social media, which shows a news piece depicting Mukesh Ambani ready to launch Reliance cab services. Using the name of the well-known newspaper, Times of India as the background, the headline reads – “@Rs 5 per kilometer – Reliance launching Cab Services on 26 January 2017 in Mumbai.” The picture of the ‘Reliance Cabs’ are poorly edited works by a shoddy designer as he has utterly plastered Reliance logo on the Ola cabs with Ola’s contact number shown 3355 3355 in full view!

Despite such glaring mistakes pointing out the story to be just a baseless rumour, it is worrying to see people’s quick reaction to such fake news. Well, lack of judgment from the true and false report is the sole reason why stories like this spread like wildfire in no time.

This is not the first time when rumours of Reliance investing in the cab services have surfaced on the internet. Last year, the talks of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industry Limited ready to launch taxi services in order to beat Ola and Uber were in full swing. There were unverified reports of “RIL buying about 2000 cars (Toyota Etios) in Kolkata to begin the project. The cars were said to have 4G connections (RIL Jio) and use compressed natural gas from RIL’s own fuel stations for refilling. On average the cost was estimated to be Rs 4 per km, way below Ola and Uber.” While the latest information says Rs 5 per km. Whatever the case maybe, if ever there would be a new Reliance venture, there will be an official confirmation of it. Till then, let’s not spam each other’s Facebook wall or WhatsApp messages with such false news.
