Chargers RB Melvin Gordon added to Pro Bowl

Putting together a bounce-back season after struggling his rookie year, Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is headed to his first Pro Bowl.

Selected as a third alternate, Gordon replaces Le'Veon Bell on the AFC roster after the Steelers running back suffered a groin injury in the AFC Championship Game over the weekend.

Gordon becomes the first Chargers running back to appear in the all-star game since Ryan Mathews in 2012. He joins teammate cornerback Casey Hayward in Sunday's contest that will be held in Orlando, Florida.

The Wisconsin product finished 3 yards short of 1,000 yards in his second season. Gordon was No. 10 in the NFL with 1,416 yards from scrimmage, and also recorded 12 total touchdowns.

Gordon missed the final three games of the season with a hip strain and sprained left knee, but felt he was healthy enough to play.

Gordon said he's focused this offseason on improving all facets of his game.

"I'm trying to continue to be an every-down back," Gordon said. "I think I showed that this year, or I tried to as best I could so they can believe in me more. I'm going to just work on my craft for sure and come back in here early.

"I'm going to work on everything. I'm not content with where I am at all. I want to be the best back in the league, so that's what I'm focused on."
