The government on Monday suspended ruling Awami League-backed Haripur union parishad chairman Dewan Atikur Rahman Akhi for his alleged involvement in attacks on Hindu houses and temples at Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria in October 2016.
‘We have received an order of the suspension of Atikur issued by the local government ministry today [Monday],’ said Nasirnagar upazila nirbahi officer Liakat Ali.
Liakat said that they received the order issued on January 15. Atikur was suspended for his alleged involvement in attacks on Hindu houses and temples at Nasirnagar, he added.
Police on January 5 arrested local AL leader Atikur.
About 200 houses and business establishments and 22 temples of religious minority Hindus were vandalised and looted at Nasirnagar upazila town and Haripur union on October 30, 2016.
The attacks came following two rallies organised demanding punishment of a Hindu young fisherman from village Harineber, Rasraj Das, for allegedly sharing a doctored photo showing an idol set on the Kaaba on his Facebook wall on October 28, 2016. Apparently in continuation of the attacks, miscreants set fire to nine houses of the Hindus on November 4, 5, 13 and 16, 2016.
