A teen who nearly died when her home was caught in flames has bounced back from a long a arduous recovery process to be been named prom queen. Kilee Brookbank was left severely scarred after a gas leak sparked a blaze in her Ohio home. The extent of the injury was such that she suffered 45 percent burns to her arms, back, legs, face, and stomach.
In an inspiring act of confidence the teenage beauty queen wore a cap-sleeve gown during the prom night where she was accompanied by her boyfriend where she was crowned prom queen. Brookbank, who had skin grafts on the entirety of her two arms says, she is grateful to be alive. She spent 38 days in the hospital and underwent several surgeries and months of physiotherapy.
Recalling the entire incident she says, As soon as I lit the candle, I could feel heat on my body. I didn't know what was happening, but I could feel heat. She awoke moments later to her dog Digger barking, and ran out of the house while she was still on fire. Brookbank unknowingly lit a candle, sparking a fireball that engulfed her body in flames.
Neighbors rushed to throw buckets of water over the high school student and called 9/11 before notifying her parents. Brookbank said, the incident has made her stronger and has taught her that nothing should be taken granted in life as there are worst things that can happen. During the course of the entire incident Kilee has maintained a positive outlook.
Brookbank has penned an inspirational book about her recovery, and received a surprise visit from Justin Beiber when she made an appearance on the TV show, The Doctors.
