By Yahya Al Salmani — MUSCAT: Jan 22 - Abo Hamad’s personal museum has more than 300 items, including old weapons Omanis used to protect themselves from attacks, pottery, handmade textiles and coins, some of which date back to 3,000 years. His collection also includes copper plates, swords, women’s silverware and rare animal horns (ibex and oryx). Hamad, an Omani who is showcasing some of his rare collections at the Muscat Festival, has been attempting to preserve Omani traditional art since 1980. His collection has been a hit among the visitors. Hamad lives in a small village in Wilayat Al Rustaq (South Al Batinah Governorate).

“Since childhood, I’ve had a liking for our tradition and culture. What you are seeing here reflects my efforts in preserving our unique heritage,” he said. Since his younger days, he has been visiting the tribes around his village. “I bought some antiques from friends, relatives and the traditional souqs around the Sultanate. I also collected items from abandoned sites.” All these cost him RO 50,000. However, their current estimated price is RO 200,000, he said. Hamad has participated in many events such as the Salalah Festival, school exhibitions and those in nearby countries, including the UAE. His collections have also been featured in many TV series. His dream is to “set up my own museum” and display distinctive items in a better manner. “I hope the government gives me the right place,” he said.
