For the first time in 37 years, it snowed in the Sahara Desert exactly a month ago, and I hope you remember how astounding the snow capped dunes looked like.

Precisely a month after that, the desert experienced one of the biggest snowfall in the living memory and the entire region was veiled in it.

Residents of Aïn Séfra, Algeria, were greeted this morning by a metre of snow, twice as much as has fallen in most ski resorts in the French Alps over the last week.

Ever since it started snowing around Christmas has been falling steadily and is now waist deep in some parts.

Photographer Sekkouri Kamel, 38, said: ‘It started snowing at around 1.30am this morning and is now one metre deep in some places. It’s absolutely incredible to have so much snow.’

The region, known as ‘The Gateway to the Desert’ is around 1000 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.
