Paper Talk: Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho replaced ball boys at Old Trafford

News Corp Australia

JOSE Mourinho is known as a manager who leaves no stone unturned.

But while the likes of Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin have been shown the door this month, this latest report is definitely the most unforgiving of all the casualties of his regime at Manchester United.

The Mirror reports that Mourinho has sacked the club’s ball boys, who were being supplied by the Manchester United Foundation.

You read that right. In the quest to account for every detail on game day, the Portuguese felt that the club’s ball boys didn’t have a feel for the game and so he has reportedly got players from Manchester United’s under-16s to fill the role instead.

The change was made for the 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford, with Mourinho’s patience running out after a 2-0 win over Hull in the EFL Cup earlier in January.

The paper quotes a United source saying: “The manager wasn’t happy with what was on offer before from the ball boys and girls. He wanted a much slicker operation — especially when United are on the attack or time is running out.

“He felt by bringing in lads from the Academy teams — boys who understand the nuances of the game and the urgency of certain occasions, it would help speed up play at crucial moments.

“Of course, people may speculate whether opponents are given the same courtesy if they are on the attack or chasing the game.”

It is reported that Mourinho felt the previous ball boys didn’t have a feel for the game - when to speed it up, and when the home team needed things slowed down.

It’s not the first time Mourinho has involved ball boys in the centre of the action. He has lectured a ball boy at Crystal Palace for slowing down the play, and mocked Newcastle United and Leicester ball boys, while at Chelsea, for time wasting.
