Probe ordered into renting of room

January 22, 2017 12:00 am | Updated 03:49 am IST - KOCHI:

The Vigilance court, Muvattupuzha, has ordered a preliminary probe against the secretary and president of the Idukki district panchayat and office-bearers of the Munnar Taxi Drivers Association (MTDA) over the alleged irregularities in renting out public property to a private individual in Munnar.

Considering a petition, Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge P. Madhavan directed the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Idukki, to probe the allegations by February 23.

The respondents in the petition were Idukki district panchayat secretary K. Kurian and president Kochuthresya Poulose; former secretary of the local body Babu and president M.D. Thomas; MTDA president S. Kathiresan and secretary Vinayakan. According to the complainant, the first four accused conspired with and assisted the office-bearers of the MTDA to allot two rooms of a building owned by the local body without any rent from 2001. The act has incurred huge losses to the panchayat and hence a case should be registered against them.
