Jallikattu is on this year
Ordinance passed for Sunday’s event; protests continue as people demand ban on PETA.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu emerged victorious in nullifying the curb on jallikattu, which was lifted on Saturday through an ordinance. However, not all protesters appeared to be convinced and continued the agitation throughout the day. Even after assurances, people have not given up their demand to ban PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The ordinance was approved by Tamil Nadu governor Vidyasagar Rao. Amid doubts in the minds of the protesting people, chief minister O Panneerselvam assured that this is the permanent solution for the issue. He informed that the bill to replace the ordinance will be tabled in the coming Assembly session on January 23.

Panneerselvam said that jallikattu is to be conducted with customary fervour all over the state with all necessary safeguards. The CM himself will launch the sport at Alanganallur near Madurai at 10 am on Sunday. “The ‘vadivasal’ (entry point through which bulls rush to the arena) will be opened for the bulls to rush out so that the jallikattu warriors can embrace them,” he said.

AIADMK flays Centre

Even though the ordinance has been passed, senior AIADMK leader and Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai on Saturday criticised the Centre for its failure to promulgate an ordinance to help conduct jallikattu. In an apparent showdown, the first since V K Sasikala took over as AIADMK general secretary, with the BJP government at the Centre, Thambidurai also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for refusing to meet a delegation of MPs led by him.

Although he said that the Centre supported the state while formulating the ordinance, they expected the Centre to make the first move.

Also, Thambidurai said he was disappointed that they could not meet the Prime Minister after waiting for three days. In the past one year the MPs from Tamil Nadu tried to meet the Prime Minister several times. But they didn’t get an appointment, Thambidurai noted. “We tried to meet the PM over Cauvery issue, fishermen issue and Katchatheevu issue. But, we could not meet him,” he said.

Cultural aspirations met, says PM

After the Centre gave its nod on jallikattu ordinance, Modi asserted that efforts are being made to fulfil the cultural aspirations of the people there. “We are very proud of the rich culture of Tamil Nadu. All efforts are being made to fulfil the cultural aspirations of Tamil people,” Modi tweeted.
