Heavy Water Plant celebrates silver jubilee

BHADRADRI-KOTHAGUDEM: Extolling the pioneering achievements of the Heavy Water Plant (HWP) at Manuguru in production of heavy water (Deuterium Oxide) in conformity with safety standards since 1991, speakers at the silver jubilee fete of the plant commended its critical role in the country’s quest for energy security and application of the nuclear energy for the benefit of common man.

The plant’s successful diversified activities such as production of materials like boron and elemental boron came in for appreciation from the speakers at the function held on a grand scale at Gautaminagar in Aswapuram mandal on Saturday evening.

Jubilee monument

Earlier in the day, Member Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and former chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) P. Rama Rao inaugurated the jubilee monument at the plant site commemorating the celebrations of the plant, which is a constituent unit of the Department of Atomic Energy.

Former chief executives of the Heavy Water Board S. M. Sundaram and Surendra Sharma inaugurated a 12 MWp solar power plant and O-18 plant respectively on the occasion.

Staff complimented

Speaking at the main ceremony held at Gautaminagar on Saturday evening, chief guest Prof. Rama Rao praised the spirited production endeavours of the HWP (Manuguru) and complimented the staff of the plant for achieving unique distinction in efficient and safe production of heavy water and other materials of immense value in achieving energy security and serving the cause of society.

A cultural show by the students of the Atomic Energy Central School, Gautaminagar, marked the concluding session of the fete on Saturday night.
