KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that research activities at varsities should benefit society.
In his inaugural address at ‘Sastrayaan’, an open house programme organised at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) on Saturday, Mr. Vijayan said the services of varsities should not be confined to issuing certificates alone.
“Universities are run with tax payers’ money. Varsities should share their research and technological findings with the general public. Researches should benefit the common man, besides contributing to the development of society,” he added.
The Chief Minister said Sastrayaan would help in taking the research gains of Cusat to society. “In the next phase, it should be open to industrialists and entrepreneurs. The technologies and products developed through research at the varsity should be used for industrial development. Students should come forward to reap the benefits of the start-up policies of the government,” the Chief Minister said.
Education Minister C. Raveendranath presided over the function. Mr. Vijayan also launched Thanneerthadangalum Jaivavaividhyavum , the 100th publication of the varsity, by handing over a copy to Mr. Raveendranath.
