College Roundup: OCC’s Obong scores 19 in win

Orange Coast 65, Fullerton 53

FULLERTON — Danielle Obong had 19 points and Michelle Wu added 17 to lead the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Obong, a Costa Mesa High product, made four of five three-point attempts to help the Pirates (15-9, 3-3 in conference) shoot 47.8% from beyond the arc (11 for 23).

Megan McCullough had 12 points and six rebounds for the winners.

Fullerton is 9-12, 1-4.

UC Riverside 79, UC Irvine 58

Senior Shereen Sutherland had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference game on Thursday.

Brooke Bayman had nine points and a career-best 10 assists, while Teirra Hicks had 11 points and Andee Ritter added eight points and six rebounds for UCI (2-16, 1-4 in conference).

UCI made nine of 19 three-point attempts, but committed 21 turnovers that led to 25 points for the Highlanders (9-8, 3-1).

UCI’s Sabrina Engelstad missed the game with an elbow injury.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Fullerton 90, Orange Coast 75

FULLERTON – Ryan Fucso had 19 points and Nate Harding added 14 to lead the visiting Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Tim Pena had 11 points for OCC (7-14, 0-6 in conference).

Fullerton is 16-5, 5-0.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Sixth-ranked UCI earned a 25-22, 25-19, 26-28, 23-25, 17-15 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Friday.

The Anteaters trailed 8-4 and again 13-11 in the final set, but battled back using a Triton service error and a block by Andrew Benz and Thomas Hodges to secure the 17-15 victory.

UCI improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the MPSF and will battle No. 5 Hawaii (5-2, 0-2) Saturday at the Bren Events Center beginning at 7 p.m.

Seniors Tamir Hershko and Thomas Hodges led UCI with a season-high 15 kills apiece. The middle was effective as Benz had a season-best 11 kills and four blocks and Scott Stadick added nine kills and three blocks. Senior Michael Saeta had five kills, 48 set assists and three aces, while sophomore Karl Apfelbach recorded seven kills in four sets. Libero Dillon Hoffman tallied a team-high 11 digs.
