Nine persons, including a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) State spokesman, who were arrested in connection with waving black flags at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during his visit here on Thursday, were set free on bail late on Friday evening.
The activists later staged a procession in Kasaragod.
The arrested pro-BJP workers had staged the protest during Mr. Vijayan’s visit here to lay the foundation stone for the NABARD-funded new building attached to the General Hospital here.
The arrested persons, protesting against the murder of a BJP loyalist at Andalloor in Dharmadom on Wednesday night, were produced before a court here on Friday charging them under provisions of the IPC, including Section 332 (causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and rioting, the police said.
Police personnel, including Kasaragod Town Sub-Inspector P. Ajithkumar, were injured when they tried to remove the agitating persons.
The arrested youths included BJYM State spokesman Vijaya Kumar Rai, Anil Kumar Rai, Rohit, Mahesh, Chandrakanth Shetty, Sandeep Kumar Shetty, Nithin Kumar, K. Rajesh, and Ajith Kumar.
Meanwhile, BJP district president K. Shreekanth in a statement accused Mr. Vijayan of sponsoring fatal attacks in his own Assembly segment.
Mr. Vijayan and the CPI(M) did not want to give recess to such attacks even at a time when Kannur was hosting the State School Arts Festival, he alleged while justifying the BJP’s decision to abstain from the series of functions attended by the Chief Minister.
