Puducherry shuts shop, observes jallikattu bandh

From 6 am transport services were halted in Puducherry and in its rural areas. Both government and private buses were out of the roads.

Puducherry: Normal life was largely affected in the Union Territory of Puducherry following the dawn to dusk bandh call given by various Tamil outfits and student organisations to protest against the ban imposed on jallikattu.

From 6 am transport services were halted in Puducherry and in its rural areas. Both government and private buses were out of the roads. The bus stand wore a deserted look. Only a few autos, two wheelers and cars were plying. Traders and merchants who extended support to the bandh call downed their shutters.

The protesters resorted to rail roko as part of the bandh. The students burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi near the new bus stand and a group of students and youths also took out a procession along with bulls in the town.
Some of the agitators picketed the Raj Nivas. The protest at AFT mill ground in Cuddalore road here entered the fourth day.
