The Miami Marlins are interested in adding a right-handed bat to form a platoon at first base with Justin Bour and have tabbed two potential candidates. According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the team has discussed free agents Chris Carter and Mark Reynolds as options to fill the role.

Rumor Central

The Milwaukee Brewers non-tendered Carter, 30, last month after he tied for the National League lead in home runs with 41 during the 2016 season. However, he also topped the league with 206 strikeouts. Overall, Carter slashed .222/.321/.499 across 644 plate appearances while earning $2.5 million.

Reynolds, 33, slashed .282/.356/.450 with 14 home runs and 53 RBIs in 441 plate appearances for the Colorado Rockies last season. A similarly strikeout-prone player, Reynolds actually posted the lowest whiff rate of his career in 2016 at 25.4 percent. The 10-year veteran made $2.6 million last year, but performed worse against left-handed pitching than when facing right-handers.

Carter also failed to demonstrate increased production against left-handed pitching in 2016, slashing .224/.338/.537 against southpaws compared to .222/.316/.487 versus righties. Between the two players, it would seem less likely that Carter settles for a platoon role following the 41-homer power surge, although his market has been slow to develop.

The Marlins received just five home runs and 28 RBIs from first basemen not named Bour last season.
