Bayern Munich's 'will to win' carried team past Freiburg - Carlo Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti credited Bayern Munich's "will to win" after coming from behind to beat Freiburg 2-1 as Robert Lewandowski grabbed a last-minute winner.

Resuming after a month's break from competitive action, Freiburg took the lead against the Bundesliga leaders after only five minutes through Janik Haberer. But Bayern's top scorer Lewandowski restored parity on 35 minutes, volleying home acrobatically from a corner.

Below-par Bayern struggled to break down a resolute Freiburg side for long periods. Just when the game seemed to be drifting to a stalemate, the Poland captain produced a truly instinctive finish, controlling substitute Franck Ribery's cross in tight space before firing in left-footed off the post.

"We faced a difficult opponent, but we didn't play well, especially in the first half," Ancelotti told German broadcaster ARD. "But I did like the team's character. Their will to win enabled us to win the game right at the end."

With the last-gasp win, league leaders Bayern move six points clear of nearest challengers RB Leipzig, who host fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

"I wasn't pleased with the way we played but obviously I'm very happy with the win," Ancelotti added.

"To start the second half of the season with three points means a lot."

Lewandowski took his tally to 14 goals in the Bundesliga this season with a strike in each half.

"It was a very difficult game and we didn't have many clear chances. We had to fight right until the end and luckily we managed to score," Lewandowski said.

"It's pleasing to win the first game after the break."

Arjen Robben echoed this sentiment, but understood the home side's despair at conceding the last-gasp goal.

"We are happy with the three points, but Freiburg perhaps deserved a draw," he said.

"Naturally, it's frustrating for Freiburg and it hurts. But that's football. A game last 90 minutes -- today 93 or 94 minutes when you can score a goal too."
