KANNUR: When it comes to drawing, it’s all in the family for Hemanth T S and Sarath Lakshman T S from Thrissur. Sons of artist Santhosh T G, Hemanth bagged the first prize in oil colour (high school) category, while his brother Sarath came second in the pencil drawing (higher secondary school) event.   Sarath is a Class XI student at GHSS Villadam and Hemanth studies in Class IX at St Thomas HSS Thope. And,  interestingly, the two contested in the state youth festival through appeal.

In the competition held on Friday, the topic for pencil drawing in HSS category was ‘Stray dogs’ and for oil colour in HS category it was ‘Rush at the railway station’. Both the young artists prefer creating lively images on canvas rather than indulging in modern art.  “Our main hobby during free time is drawing. Also, our father encourages us to create better art,’’ says Hemanth, who wishes to pursue a career in fine arts.

But Sarath says, “I don’t wish to take up drawing as profession; instead, I aspire to be an engineer. But I will certainly find time to create excellent artworks.”
Last year, the brothers had contested in the higher secondary category in the district youth festival and Sarath advanced to the state event with an ‘A’ grade.
“They had a sense of drawing right from a young age and  developed their skills without the help of anyone. Though we took them to a drawing institute, they did not attend the classes regularly,” says their mother Dhanya V P.
