A newly opened Infant school in the Korotale-Narara area in Rakiraki was a dream-come true, according to school manager and community advisory councillor Mohammed Abbas.

“We have been trying to get a school built in this area before I joined as an Advisory councillor in the village, 15 years ago,” Mr Abbas said.

“It was in 2015 when our request got approved by Dr Reddy (Education Minister Mahendra Reddy) and a pre-school was built in the area the following year.”

He said that the dream was their forefather’s and the current villagers were happy as a major problem of the area got solved thanks to the help of Mr Reddy and his ministry.

Mr Reddy, who was the chief guest at the opening yesterday, said it was the goal of the Government to meet the aspirations of the ordinary Fijian.

“We believe in delivering and we deliver, we meet the aspirations of ordinary Fijians,” Mr Reddy said at the opening of the school.

The school was opened last year as a pre-school and upgraded to an Infant School yesterday with the inclusion of a classroom for year one students.

Mr Reddy said that this construction was necessary as the two Iris h crossings that led to the village easily got flooded, sometimes with only a few drizzles.

“This facility would help students to get their early education at least till year one before moving to higher primary education,” Mr Reddy said.

“And in this process we do not want them to spend any money. We have provided the text books. We have provided the teachers, we will provide the curriculum.

“All we need is for parents to send their children to school.”

He said that the past governments have used the phrase “we will look into it” too lightly.
