NOIDA: Noida Authority has designed an eco-friendly garbage vat following a cleanliness drive undertaken by Deepak Agarwal, CEO, Noida Authority earlier this month. A sample model of the vat has been located at sector 34 and will be used on a pilot basis for the project. If successful, the model will be replicated in other sectors of city, say officials.
According to officials, the model vat has been designed keeping in mind the city’s slogan of “clean Noida, Green Noida”.
It has been designed under the guidance of Noida’s project engineer Sandeep Chandra. “Considering residents complain whenever there is a garbage collection vat in their vicinity because of the foul smell, unhealthy environs and unclean sight, we decided to improvise on the present vats,” Chandra told TOI. “The model we have designed has been done aesthetically besides keeping it practical,” he said.
Chandra further explained that the most salient feature of the garbage vat is that it will not be visible from the road. “It is enclosed by a green covering, which will keep the unsightly garbage out of sight,” he said. “It is equipped with a rolling gate, which will be opened at specific time for disposal as well as collection of garbage by us. The vat is also fitted with cattle trap, which will also keep other smaller animals away. To reduce the smell of the waste, we will be using molasses, which will be sprayed on the garbage so that there is no foul smell emanating,” he explained.
“For starters this vat has been constructed at sector 34. If the project proves to be successful, we will replicate the model and place it in other sectors, too,” he added. “It is a highly economic project and will also keep the environs clean,” he said.
Currently, Noida generates a whopping 700 tonnes of municipal waste every day. About 1600 health department workers strive to keep the city clean. With the help of individual Resident Welfare Associations (RWA)s, Noida Authority has put into place mechanisms to deal with the garbage generated by hiring garbage collectors, who collect and dispose it in a disorganized manner leaving the city littered and in a mess.
Despite an annual budget of over a hundred crores, residents complain that the waste is being dumped in an unscientific manner, leaving residents with a threat of infection and risk of damage to the ground water.
