Centre helps to stablise O Paneerselvam government

A day after he assured Tamil Nadu CM O. Paneerselvam that he appreciated the cultural significance of jallikattu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have more than walked the talk.

Highly placed sources said the Centre took a serious view after it received information that crowds at Marina Beach in Chennai were shouting slogans against the CM as well as against PM Modi.

That is why on Friday, the Centre pulled out all stops to bail out the Tamil Nadu Government. It was not just the seeking of postponement of the order on the jallikattu matter by a week by Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi in the Supreme Court to facilitate issuance of an ordinance by the state. The Centre also advised Paneerselvam and his officials on how to handle the tricky matter at the state level .

Official sources pointed out that the so-called people's movement for jallikattu had political overtones. It was found that the spontaneous onrush of crowds at Marina Beach included several ultra left groups. There were several radical- -Tamil groups that even carried pro-LLTE placards.

SASIKALA UNHAPPY?
Of course, these groups are not Delhi's worry. What is a matter of consternation is that anti-Paneerselvam slogan shouting by the crowds indicated a big factional feud within the AIADMK. It is not clear if the new AIADMK supremo Sashikala Natarajan wants the CM out and has used the jallikattu agitation to build momentum to dethrone him.

In fact, it is quite possible, she may be very unhappy that Paneerselvam is getting so much support from PM Modi to solve the legal imbroglio, indicated sources.

AIADMK sources said Sashikala sent loyalist Lok Sabha deputy speaker M.Thambidurai to Delhi as soon as the CM reached Delhi and sought to meet with PM along with the CM.

Sources said Modi is so miffed with Thambidurai for speaking against demonetistion in the Lok Sabha that he refused to grant him an audience, as a result he had to take a delegation of 45 MPs to meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh. "Since the PM will not meet us, we had to meet Home Minister," conceded a AIADMK MP.

AIADMK dismissed the help being rendered to Tamil Nadu as a special favour. "What has been done is not unusual. If the Centre does not do even this much, no one from Delhi will be able to step into the state, " warned a Rajya Sabha MP.
