Manchester City target Ivan Rakitic wants Barcelona stay

Ivan Rakitic says he wants to commit his future to Barcelona despite continued speculation linking him with Manchester City.

Rakitic has been in and out of the Barca side recently and has not started a league game since the draw with Real Madrid on Dec. 3.

He has started three Copa del Rey matches since then, though, including Thursday's win at Real Sociedad.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu has previously said the club want to tie the Croatian down to a new deal and the player has said that is also his priority.

"I want to sit down with the club because I want to renew my contract and stay here for many years," he told reporters after Barca's first win at Anoeta in 10 years.

While Rakitic's current terms run until 2019, his lack of minutes and increased competition from Andre Gomes, Denis Suarez and Rafinha has led to the speculation he could join City, with a source telling ESPN FC this week that the Premier League side are monitoring his situation.

He admits he wants to play more but says he understands Luis Enrique doesn't have an easy job choosing 11 players each week.

"The manager knows that I'm not happy when I'm not on the pitch, he knows me better than anyone," he added. "I have to work really hard to be at my best and be able to show that to the manager. After that he makes the decisions.

"There are more than 20 guys in the squad. We all want to play and we have to understand [if we don't]. The manager knows I want to play every week and never miss a game.

"I'm not 15. [Luis Enrique] doesn't have to explain anything to me. The only solution is to work hard and take advantage of each opportunity he gives me. I'm calm because I'm working hard."

In an interview released in the week, Rakitic said he would jump off a bridge for Luis Enrique.

When asked about that remark, the player joked: "Sometimes there are bridges which aren't that high which you can jump off!"
