Malappuram’s Islahiya Oriental HSS defeated Kasargod’s Government HSS 4-2, via the tiebreaker, and booked the last semifinal berth at the Mar Athanasius Trophy all-India schools football tournament on Thursday.

The teams were goalless at the end of the regulation period.

Jayakrishnan (five for 14) and Jayesh Kumar (four for 15) shone as VSSC crushed Civil Services XI by 77 runs in the Thiruvananthapuram District B-division cricket league on Thursday.

The scores:

B-division: VSSC 148 in 39.2 overs (S. Subin 38, Sajith Kumar 34, Vijay Sreenivas three for 30, Radha Krishnan three for 42) bt Civil Services XI 71 in 22.2 overs (Jayakrishnan five for 14, Jayesh Kumar four for 15).

C-division: Yuva CC 155 in 25 overs (Yedu Krishnan 62) bt Ashes CC 124 for seven in 26 overs (Rajeev four for 33).

‘Hoopathon’ today

Nearly 125,000 kids will have their first taste of basketball with the ‘Hoopathon’ which will be held all over Kerala on Friday to celebrate 125 years of basketball.

Team Rebound, a fraternity of basketball players who are keen to pass their knowledge to the younger generation, is the big push behind the Hoopathon which will see each of these 125,000 children score a basket to mark the hoop game’s anniversary.

“We have picked 125 schools all over Kerala and a hundred children in each school will start basketball during the event tomorrow,” said former international Iqbal Sait on Thursday. “We will also be donating six balls to each school.”

Ernakulam will have the maximum number of schools in action on Friday with 25 institutions lined up.

Arjuna awardee Abbas Moontasir will inaugurate the event at the Global Public School here at 10.30 a.m.

Basketball

referees’ test

The Kerala Basketball Association’s referees commission will conduct tests to appoint referees to the State panel on January 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The tests, at the St. Joseph Pontifical Seminary at Mangalapuzha near Aluva, will include theory and practical sessions, and there will also be a fitness test for all referees above 50 years for license renewal and activation purposes.

Interested candidates should carry an authorisation letter from their district secretary or president and have to report to Fr. Philps Wadakkekalam, chairman of the KBA’s technical commission.
