BENGALURU: THE Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday strongly objected to the bail petition filed by JD(S) leader K C Veerendra who is facing charges of criminal conspiracy in connection with illegal possession of new currency notes post demonetisation.

During the hearing of his bail petition before the High Court, CBI Special Public Prosecutor Prasanna Kumar argued that the investigation into the cash seizure is ongoing and that it will be affected if the accused is released on bail. The authorities had seized `6.64 crore, including `5.7 crore in new currency notes, from Veerendra’s bathroom in Challakere of Chitradurga district. T

he counsel for the accused submitted that his client has violated only the RBI guidelines and so far nothing has been found against him during investigation. He argued that the accused has time to give a reply to the Income Tax department for possessing cash. Taking note of it, Justice Rathnakala asked the CBI to submit details of the progress made in the case by January 24. The CBI court had rejected bail to Veerendra after which he approached the High Court for relief.
