From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha

Gunmen yesterday invaded a popular drinking and entertainment joint, Maimi Garden, at Omagba Phase 2, Onitsha, Anambra State, injuring one person, carting away N1. 8 million cash and destroying property worth about N16 million.

The hoodlums, numbering about 20, with vehicles and motorcycles, gained entrance to the joint at the wee hours, after overpowering members of the local vigilance group on guard.  They assaulted other workers  and collected their phones.

Eyewitness said  the owner of the joint was not around when the  incident happened, but the injured person was rushed to a nearby hospital where he has been receiving treatment.

When Daily Sun visited the scene, policemen from Inland Town Police Station were around, just as  people trooped in to find out what happened.

The Managing Director of Maimi Garden, Mr. Onyeka Ezeuzor, said the incident happened between 3.30am to 4.30am yesterday morning. According to him, he was called on phone by one of his workers, who  informed him about the incident.

According to Ezeuzor, “they damaged my musical instruments worth over N6 million, five plasma televisions worth over N150, 000 each, wine bar containing assorted drinks worth over N700, 000, structures, chairs, tables, cartons and bottles of alcoholic beverages and broke into my office, ransacked and turned it upside down and took N1.8 million cash, being money made from the previous day sales.

“My workers said the gunmen were shouting at them asking where I was, saying that since I did not want to leave here, I would leave as a dead man.  Everything lost here is worth over N16 million.”

On who could have carried out the attack, he said there are people he suspects. “I  have the names of the people I am suspecting to be behind this destruction. I have made statement, with my workers, to the police; my life is in danger.

I have told my lawyers and the police the people I am suspecting,” he stated.
