Odisha CMC sets up special court for tax defaulters

The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has set up its own court to deal with tax defaulters of the city. The Special Certificate Court will start functioning from Friday.

CUTTACK: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has set up its own court to deal with tax defaulters of the city. The Special Certificate Court will start functioning from Friday.

The court, which can summon the tax defaulters, has the power to punish them. CMC Deputy Commissioner Radha Krishna Rout has been designated as the Special Certificate Officer (SCO) with power of Magistrate who will preside over the court and dispose of cases of tax evasion. The SCO will register case for recovery of municipal dues under Odisha Public Demand Recovery (OPDR) Act.

Sources said the civic body’s tax arrears have crossed ` two crore. Several certificate cases involving tax defaulter’s arrear of more than `25 lakh have been filed before the Collector and less than `25 lakh before the Sub-Collector for hearing. Now, these cases will be disposed of by the CMC’s certificate court, said SCO Radha Krishna Rout.
