Yettinahole Project: Survey for dam in Tumakuru ends

The final hearing of NGT on granting forest clearance for Yettinahole Project will be held today.

Hassan: While the final hearing of the National Green Tribunal on the petition against granting of forest clearance for the Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project is scheduled for Friday, the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) has almost completed its survey for the construction of a reservoir at Byragundlu in Koratagere, Tumakuru district, for supply of water to Chikkaballapura and Kolar under the scheme.

Aimed at storing about 5.78 tmc feet of water , the reservoir will cover about 2,000 hectares and in the process displace people of Belladahalli, Chinnahalli and Lakkamuttanahalli in Koratagere.

KNNL engineers hope to draw about 24 tmc feet of water from the west flowing streams of Sakleshpur in Hassan and store it in the reservoir for supply to drought-prone areas of Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Ramanagar and other districts in the eastern part of the state.

Explaining that land in Belladahalli, Chinnahalli and Lakkamuttanahalli had been chosen for the reservoir as they supported a small population, they assured that the displaced people would be resettled under the guidance of the Commissioner for Rehabilitation and Resettlement and a body headed by the Deputy Commissioner would approve their rehabilitation package. "Once the reservoir is built the bulk of the water will be supplied to Chikkaballapura and Kolar. It will then be upto the urban water supply agency concerned, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department or the City Municipal Council (CMC) to distribute the water to the residents,” they said.
