CHENNAI: The Arignar Anna Zoological park in Vandalur is limping back to normalcy. The officials have completed nearly 50% of the restoraion work, including building of damaged perimeter wall, top portion of enclosures, clearing of trees from the walking area and repairing of damaged pipelines.
Additional principal chief conservator of forests and zoo director Amit Asthana told TOI that they had taken up the restoration work on a war footing and the zoo will be ready to receive visitors from first week of February.
Street lights in the zoo, electricity cable and roof of the electricity sub- station were also damaged. Restoration of all of them were happening on a full swing.
“Many felt that with clearing of wind fallen trees, the zoo could have been thrown open to visitors from Kanum Pongal. But, that was not possible, as a carelessly thrown matchstick is more than sufficient to raze down the entire area. It will also result in panic among visitors, leading to stampede, as the zoo has only one entry and one exit gate. So we decided not to open the zoo for Pongal holidays,” he explained.
