DEHRADUN: In what may come as relief to residents of localities like Reetha Mandi and Lakhibagh in the city, who have long complained of impure water being supplied to their area, a new water treatment plant has come up at Dilaram Chowk.
The plant built by Asian Development Bank (ADB) completed construction this month and is set to be operational soon. The plant, which will also cater to Rajpur Road, Karanpur and Sahastradhara will treat 27.5 million litres of water per day.
Besides this, an existing treatment plant at Dilaram Chowk is being fitted with an aeration fountain and percolator to improve water quality.
Ruksana Shaikh, a resident of Reetha Mandi said, “More such plants are required. At present, the water that is supplied to us is not only foul-smelling but also muddy. We have to boil it before use.”
The ADB has also refurbished another plant at Shahenshahi Ashram with a capacity of treating 14 million litres of water per day.
Vinay Mishra, project manager, ADB, told TOI, “We have refurbished the plant at Shahenshahi Ashram to ensure cleaner water supply. Apart from this, a new filtering plant with a capacity of treating 15 million litres of water per day is under construction at Purukul.”
The cost of construction of the two new treatment plants and refurbishing the two existing ones is approximately Rs 40 crore.
