IUCN shocked at killing of Mexican environmental activist

IUCN is shocked and saddened by the killing of Mexican environmental activist Isidro Baldenegro, known for his tireless struggle against illegal logging.

A community leader of the indigenous Tarahumara people, Isidro Baldenegro led a peaceful campaign to protect ancient forests in his native Sierra Madre mountains. He was killed by a gunman in his native village after receiving death threats.

“We are appalled by such senseless violence inflicted on peaceful protesters. Conservation cannot take place in an atmosphere of violence and fear, and activists who dedicate their lives to protecting people and nature must receive protection,” said IUCN Director General Inger Andersen.

IUCN calls on world governments to do everything in their power to prosecute those targeting environmental activists across Latin America and beyond.

A winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, Isidro Baldenegro was one of Mexico’s most prominent environmental activists. His killing follows the recent death of Honduran Indigenous environmental leader Berta Caceres – also a Goldman prize winner – and highlights the threats faced by environmental activists in Latin America.
