Falcons' Arthur Blank hopes to close Georgia Dome with Super Bowl berth

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank couldn't imagine a better way to finish the team's residency in the Georgia Dome.

Sunday's NFC Championship Game between the Falcons and the Green Bay Packers will be the last game played at the Georgia Dome. That only adds to the drama of the proceedings.

"I think it means a lot, having the opportunity to win this game and go to the Super Bowl," Blank told ESPN.com. "I think it means a lot for me, because it means a lot to our players, to our coaches, to our fans, to all of our sponsor partners, to everybody who has been committed to the franchise since 1966. This will be only the second opportunity we’ll have to play in the Super Bowl, if we are successful on Sunday."

Blank, the cofounder of Home Depot, purchased the Falcons in February 2002. The Falcons last made it to the Super Bowl during the 1998 season, losing to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXIII (34-19). After that, the Falcons lost in the NFC Championship Game during the 2004 and 2012 seasons.

Now they find themselves, again, one step away from the Super Bowl behind MVP candidate Matt Ryan.

"I love the way our team is playing," Blank said. "I love the trend on the team, the emergence of talent on both sides of the ball. So there’s a lot to love."

A victory Sunday, no doubt, would go down as Blank's best memory of the Georgia Dome, but there have been plenty.

"Looking back at my 15 years in the Georgia Dome, I guess my first game there certainly would be one I reflect on," Blank said. "My last game, win or lose, I’ll certainly be able to reflect on that. A number of games that we won in the last second, second half, under the direction of a variety of coaches and a great quarterback in Matt Ryan -- hopefully potentially an MVP quarterback -- and a number of exciting years when we had Michael Vick playing at his highest level, those were the things that I would look back and be thrilled that I was there for."
