5 Hacks To Follow Before You Embrace Matte Lipsticks

Matte lipsticks are having a huge moment, with Huda Beauty lipsticks and Kylie Lipkits breaking the world of beauty. But, if you have ever applied these lipsticks you must have realised that they dry out your lips, no matter how attractive they might look. Between that awful dried wax feeling, and the way it magnifies every single speck of dead skin on your pout, it can be a bit of a challenge to wear them. But with these brilliant matte lipstick hacks, you'll be ready to embrace the shine-free life in no time.

Exfoliate your lips

Matte lipstick easily settles into any rough patches on your lips, so you should ideally start with a smooth canvas. Exfoliate every other day, with a gentle lip scrub on your finger or with a washcloth. We know that many people advise to exfoliate with a toothbrush, but the bristles can be harsh on your delicate lips. Instead, use a warm cotton washcloth and, after taking off your make-up, exfoliate by rubbing the cloth in small circles on your lips until they tingle.

Apply lip balm

To keep your lips hydrated make sure you apply a thin layer of lip balm so that your pout does not get flaky, after you apply your matte lipstick. This will also give you the perfect matte effect.

Apply from the bullet

Engrave it in your heart: Don't mess with lip brushes when it comes to matte. That is the number one way to make any lipstick look streaky and uneven, even if it's the most amazing formula in the world. Apply your colour straight from the bullet, or the tube, onto your prepped lips for maximum perfection.

Always line after you apply the colour

Matte lipstick demands a perfect outline. Yes, we said it. And the best way to go about this is to apply your colour, then neaten up your outline with a matching shade of lip liner (please don't switch shades of the lip liner if you don't want a beauty disaster.) This order-reversal means you don't have to mess around with getting your outline perfect, then applying your lipstick, then fixing small mistakes you made when applying your lipstick. Basically, it saves time and makes your life easier.

Remove with coconut oil

We are in love with this oil. We can't help it. You can use your favourite moisturiser to remove the lipstick, but we recommend virgin coconut oil. Why? It is antibacterial and uber moisturising. So apply it on your lips, and wipe away with a tissue. Not only does the lip colour come off beautifully, but your lips will also feel amazing.
