Soulful Songs (Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo)

on Jan 19, 2017

‘Lahiri Lahiri Lahirlo’ from Maya Bazar movie, composed by Saluri Rajeswara Rao, written by Pingali Nagendra Rao, sung by Ghantasala and P.Leela. What can I say about this song? A simple but an immensely catchy tune which is always in the heart of every Telugu music lover. This is one of the very rare songs were N.T.Rama Rao and Akkineni Nageswara Rao who are considered as two eyes of Telugu film industry have acted together. Maya Bazar is a first mythological movie in 1957. This is first released in Telugu and later in Tamil & dubbed in Kannada. It has become the first Telugu film to be digitally remastered and colorized, at an estimated cost of Rs. 75 million. The updated version was released in 2010. This movie remains as one of all-time hit movies of both the stars NTR and ANR. Lahiri lahiri lahirilo was shot in Ennore, Chennai. Its outdoor filming lasted for 10 to 15 seconds. Cinematographer Bartley then created an illusion of moonlight, which was considered as the first for an Indian film of all time.

This song starts off with a haunting music followed by Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo sung by melodious voices Ghantasala and P.Leela. Four songs "Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo", "Srikarulu Devathalu", "Choopulu Kalisina Shubhavela" and "Neekosame" songs in this movie were originally composed by S.Rajeswara Rao and rest of the eight songs & background score in Maya bazar were done by God of music 'Ghantasala'. When comes to Lahiri lahiri lahirilo, Ghantashala has orchestrated, recorded and sung Rajeswara Rao's composition. P.Leela has accompanied Ghantasala in this song. She is one of the classical singers who has sung wonderful songs in telugu, tamil, malayalam and kannada. She is one of the favorite singers of Ghantasala as well. Lava Kusa is one of the examples were Ghantasala has music directed and singers Susheela and Leela have represented Lava Kusa to sing awesome classics in that movie. The combination of Ghantasala and Leela has given Telugu cinema some of the most beautiful and everlasting songs.

This song is composed in Mohana raagam, a very pleasant tune which is easy to sing by every person. Ghantashala has used very basic instruments which were available in 1950s. As per the song situation, the song must be very soft and soothing. Listening to this tune, definitely every person enjoys the beauty of this song.

Lyrics were penned by Pingali Nagendra Rao. I love the way lyricist has written this song especially stanzas.

taaraachandrula vilaasamulatO virisE vennela paravaDilO
poola valaputO GhumaGhumalaaDE pilla vaayuvula laalanalO
laahiri laahiri laahirilO ohO jagamE voogenugaa voogenugaa toogenugaa

This song has a situation where the actors travel over a boat and hum a song together. Based on this situation, Pigali tried to use the words like taaraachadrulu, vennela, poolu, alalu etc.

Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo is probably one song that everyone, from a 6 year old to a 60 year old has hummed, either casually, or probably playing Antyakshari or just enjoying the beauty of the song. Songs don’t get more soulful and evergreen than this. The beauty is in the simple yet catchy composition and the lovely picturization. If this song is not in your evergreen playlist, you are missing something. Go ahead and give it a listen.
