College in Gujarat to pay hefty fine for allowing cheating during the exam

KK Parekh Commerce College, Gujarat is in news for the oblivious attitude of school authority and staff during the B.Com sixth semester exam. On March 16, 2016 while writing for B.Com sixth semester in March 16, the students of the university were found practicing unfair means, browsing on phones and interacting with fellow students during the exam. The incident got viral on social media and ignited animosity toward the academic staff. As a consequence, the Saurashtra University imposed a hefty fine of Rs 12 Lakh to the school principal and teachers of KK Parekh Commerce College.

KK Parekh Commerce College is run by Amreli Vidhya Sabha. It is deemed as one of the oldest colleges affiliated to Saurashtra University. The Saurashtra University took action after the social media got deluged by the viral news in which students were spotted cheating during the exam freely. “I personally went to the college to check if the video was genuine. An examination of the premises and interaction with students revealed it was indeed real,” stated Prabhatsinh Chauhan, the Vice-Chancellor of Saurashtra University.

A fine of Rs 2 Lakh was imposed on Amreli Vidhya Sabha and a fine of Rs 75,000 to the principal. 11 teachers of KK Parekh Commerce College were asked to pay Rs 50,000 each 4 computer technicians were imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 fines for tampering with the CCTV footage where students were being filmed cheating. Prabhatsinh Chauhan added “To my knowledge, no college in the history of Gujarat has been slapped with such a huge penalty. But it has been done to set a precedent.”
