Teacher claims he was fired ‘for cancer surgery’

A Success Academy Charter School teacher says he was fired for taking four weeks off — for cancer surgery.

Thorton Maldonado, 36, said he was “well liked by his students and peers” when hired to coach the chess team at its Harlem school in July 2015, his Manhattan civil lawsuit says.

But after he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in September 2015 and encouraged to take two two-week medical leaves for treatment, he says he was fired the day before his scheduled return.

He claims a “case of explicit and egregious disability discrimination.”

A Success spokeswoman declined to comment.
