Chandigarh, Jan 18: Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal in his Punjab campaigning has been levelling allegations against President of Youth Akali Dal Bikram Singh Majithia. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a press conference on Tuesday stated that  “Majithia and his entire gang has pushed Punjab into drugs. People are scared of them… When AAP government is formed, we will punish them. I want to say that on March 11 results will be declared and government will be in place by March 22. And on April 15, we will send Majithia behind the bars. People of Punjab will get freedom not just from drug menace, but they will be free from reign of terror and goondaism.”

However, the main question is that who is Bikram Singh Majithia?

Strong political background

The president of Youth Akali Dal, Bikram Singh Majithia is a two time winner of Vidhan Sabha elections from Majithia constituency and is also a Cabinet Minister in Punjab government. Majithia has deep political connections and he is the son of former deputy defence minister Satyendra Singh Majithia and brother of union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal. His brother in law is deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Majithia is cousin nephew of Punjab Congress Chief Captain Amarinder Singh. He represents Majitha constituency that holds a stronghold of the Majithia community.

Alleged to be involved in drug racket

Bikram Singh Majithia has been into many controversies and is also been alleged to be  responsible for drug rackets in Punjab. The Enforcement Directorate in 2014 summoned Majithia in an international synthetic drug case worth Rs 6,000 crore. Majithia came into centre of controversies after Jagdish Bhola, the man arrested in drugs trade alleged Majithia responsible to run the drug racket in the state and also stated that the administration had full knowledge of the racket. Drug menace being a key poll issue in the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, political parties like AAP and Congress held Majithia responsible for the entire drug menace in the state and promise of putting him behind the bars if voted to power.

Controversial figure

Majithia has also been into controversies after distorting the Gurbani while seeking votes for BJP candidate Arun Jaitley during the 2014 general elections. In September 2016, a shoe was hurled at him during the monsoon session.

Majithia in upcoming Assembly elections 2017

The 42 year old Youth Akali Dal president currently holds portfolios of revenue and rehabilitation, renewable energy and public relations. In the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, Bikram Singh Majithia will be facing a tough competition in a triangular battle between SAD-BJP, AAP and Congress. Contesting from Majitha constituency, Bikram Singh Majithia will be contesting against Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lalli Majthia from Congress and Himmat Singh Shergil from AAP.
