Kochi: The Kodungallur police on Wednesday arrested five persons for torturing a man after stripping him naked on Saturday night at Azhikode. The arrested are Menon Bazar Vattaparambil Babu (52), Kothath Saikumar (26), Therpurakkal Mikhil (27), Chikku alias Mahesh (27)and Siyad (30). Police are in search for more persons in connection with the incident.
Salam Sulaiman (47) of Menon Bazar Pallipparambu who was allegedly spotted under suspicious circumstances near a house in the locality was tied to an electric post by a group of people and tortured for hours together. The visuals of the torture scene were taken on mobile camera and were uploaded to the social media including WhatsApp by the group. It is also said that Salam was robbed of Rs 3000 by the attackers.
He was released after the police arrived at the spot. Salam who was first admitted to Kodungallur Government Hospital was later shifted to a private hospital in Kochi where he is undergoing expert treatment. The attack by the ‘moral police’ had invited widespread condemnation following which the police acted fast.
