As part of its efforts to encourage budding entrepreneurs, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has allotted free stalls for local start-ups to display their items during the ongoing Shop Qatar festival.
The festival features 30 temporary pop-up shops at participating malls to enable the entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their locally-produced items such as kids' clothing, men's wear, abayas, jewellery, accessories and chocolate, as well as art works and furniture.
The participating malls include Ezdan Mall, Landmark Mall, The Gate Mall, Mall of Qatar and Lagoona Mall.
Ten pop-up stores were set up at Mall of Qatar during the visit of Qatar Development Bank (QDB) CEO Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Khalifa on Wednesday.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, QTA Chief Tourism Development Officer Hassan al Ibrahim said,"Tourism industry in Qatar is providing various opportunities to entrepreneurs and start-ups to benefit from the large number of tourists we are receiving and are expecting to receive every year. People who patronise the shops will enter into the weekly raffle being organised as part of the Shop Qatar festival.
"We have adopted many platforms to promote local entrepreneurs who currently do not have businesses. These include the Qatar International Food Festival and Summer Festival."
Talking about how the selection of the beneficiaries in the initiative is made, Ibrahim said they worked with entities like Qatar Business Incubation Center, Qatar Development Bank and Bedaya.
"We have used the database of organizations to see the performances of start-ups for participating in the festival. We wanted to make sure that the choice of the entrepreneurs is based on their performance and creative ideas that they will be presenting throughout the festival," he said.
