On the last day for the filing of nominations for the Punjab Assembly elections today, Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, 66, of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla, 44, and Upkar Singh Sandhu, 63, of the Aam Aadmi Party filed their papers for the Amritsar Lok Sabha bypoll.

Accompanied by Navjot Singh Sidhu, OP Soni, Dr Raj Kumar and Jugal Kishore Sharma, Gurjeet Singh Aujla filed his nomination papers.

Addressing media persons, Aujla said the development of the holy city as a tourism, industrial and business hub will be his main agenda and claimed that the residents of the constituency had given him the mandate to represent them in Parliament.

Chhina, a joint candidate of the BJP-SAD combine filed his nomination today amid a show of strength. He took out a road show from Ranjit Avenue to the District Courts where he filed the papers in the presence of Union Minister for Steel, Mines and Employment Narendra Singh Tomar, besides Akali leaders and workers.

The road show passed through the streets and workers danced to the tunes of dhol and raised slogans hailing Chhina and the SAD-BJP.

Later, Chhina launched an attack on former MPs from the constituency, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Captain Amarinder Singh, for ignoring the segment and the people living there as they never stayed in the area to pay heed to the grievances of the people and accused them of ignoring this border segment.

Accompanied by minister Anil Joshi, Rajya Sabha MP Shawet Malik, former minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla, Baldev Raj Chawla, Tarun Chugh, Rajesh Honey, Rakesh Gill, Vir Singh Lopoke and Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora, Chhina promised the voters he would bring Central grants and asked the voters to elect him because the NDA government at the Centre led by Narendra Modi would sanction adequate grants for development projects in the holy city.

“With my own party’s government at the Centre, I would be able to bring Central grants for every section of society,” he said, adding he will be available to the voters and not go missing like Navjot Singh Sidhu or Captain Amarinder Singh.

Meanwhile, Tomar said voting for Chhina would be akin to voting for the Modi government. He said the Modi government was working round the clock for the betterment of society and the downtrodden and was taking decisions that would put India among the developed countries of the world.

Meanwhile, AAP nominee Upkar Singh Sandhu also filed his papers for the Amritsar Lok Sabha by-election. Sandhu had left the Congress to join the AAP only a few days ago. Some months ago, he had resigned from SAD to express his displeasure at the instances of desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

In all, a total of eight candidates are in the fray for the Amritsar Lok Sabha bypoll. BSP (Ambedkar) has fielded Shanker Singh, 66, Apna Punjab Party has fielded Gurinder Singh, 50, and Shiromani Lok Dal Gulzar Singh, 50.

In addition, two independents are also in the fray. They are Inderpal, 55, and Parmod Kumar, 46.
