Punjab Royals beat defending champions Mumbai Maharathi 5-4 in the second semifinal here today to set a date with Haryana Hammers in the summit clash of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL).

In what turned out to be a see-saw contest, the fans were treated to some brilliant display of wrestling with the lead swinging from one side to the other till the very end.

Jabrayil Hasanov won the first bout of the evening against Punjab’s Jitendra 18-2 in the 74kg category.

Odunayo Adekuoroye led the fightback for Punjab after defeating Lalita Sehrawat 16-0 in the women’s 53kg bout.

Rio Olympics gold medallist Vladimer Khinchegashvili gave Punjab the lead by winning the 57kg bout against Rahul Aware. Reigning Olympics champion in the women’s 75kg, Erica Elizabeth Wiebe, then brought Mumbai back by getting the better of Vasilisa Marzaliuk 2-1. Ilyas Bekbulatov gave Punjab the lead by clinching the 65kg bout against Vikas 17-0 in just a minute. Pavlo Oliynyk brought Mumbai back by clinching the 97kg bout 12-0 against Krishan Kumar.

Nirmala Devi won her 48kg bout by beating Carolina Hidalgo, and when Pankaj Rana beat Pritam in the 70kg bout, Punjab took an unassailable 5-3 lead. — PTI

Baba Ramdev ‘beats’ Olympics medallist

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev took on 2008 Olympics silver medallist Andriy Stadnik in a promotional bout of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) here today. Sporting his typical saffron langot, Ramdev won the completely one-sided bout 12-0, avenging the loss Sushil Kumar suffered against the Ukrainian wrestler in the Beijing Olympics! Sounds fantastic, except for the small fact that the wrestler allowed Ramdev, who’s sponsoring PWL, win without putting up even a semblance of resistance.
