A car dealer suffered "horrendous injuries" during a robbery on a test drive, police said.

Police said the victim had left the driver's seat to swap places with the suspect when he was locked out.

He was then hit by a van and dragged down the road. He remains in hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

The robbery took place at Galliford Try Construction near Wolvey, Warwickshire, at about 14:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The van was seen driving off towards the A5, police said.

Officers are now hunting for the suspect, who is believed to be a short, slim man with a shaved head, and who was earlier picked up by the injured man at The Pheasant Pub in Withybrook.

Det Insp John Belcher said: "This was an extremely serious incident that has left a man with horrendous injuries that are likely to change his life.

"At this time we're keeping an open mind as to whether the suspect intended to injure the victim or whether this was a robbery gone wrong.

"Either way, I believe someone out there has some information that will help us to identify the man responsible and I would urge that person to come forward."
